“A beautiful cake begins long before the first slice is served.” — August June Desserts

Most people think a cake tasting begins when you sit down at the table. In reality, it starts long before that.
At August June Desserts, each tasting is thoughtfully prepared behind the scenes—from flavor selection and baking to packaging and presentation—so that by the time you arrive, the experience feels seamless, elevated, and intentional. If you’ve ever wondered what goes into preparing your cake tasting, here’s a look behind the scenes.
It Starts With Intentional Flavor Selection
Before a single cake is baked, the first step is deciding which flavors will be included in a sampler box. Rather than offering random selections, tastings are curated to give you a well-rounded experience of the menu—typically including a mix of four classic, signature, and premium flavors.
This allows you to explore a range of textures and flavor profiles while getting a true sense of what August June Desserts offers. Learn more about our flavor selections.

Baking Each Sample From Scratch
Once flavors are selected, the baking process begins. Each cake is made from scratch using premium ingredients—the same way every custom cake is prepared. This ensures that your tasting is not a “sample version,” but an accurate reflection of the final product you’ll receive for your event.
Behind the scenes, this includes:
Mixing batters
Baking and cooling layers
Preparing fillings and frostings
Every detail matters, even at the sample stage.

Preparing and Portioning the Samples
After baking, each cake is cut into individual tasting portions to fill small cake sample containers. The portions are then frosted and decorated according to their flavor profile. Each flavor has an elevated presentation style so that it's easy to identify cake flavors.
This step is all about consistency—so each bite gives you the full experience of flavor, texture, and balance.

Designing the Tasting Box Experience
Presentation is a key part of the August June Desserts experience. I take great care in ensuring the presentation is also an experience. Each tasting box is assembled with care, including:
Individual sample containers
Flavor selection listing
Structured packaging for easy tasting
Branded details (stickers and tissue)
Coordinated colors that reflect a clean, elevated aesthetic
Each cake sample box is thoughtfully placed inside a small gift bag, carefully prepared with everything needed for your tasting experience. Inside, you’ll find a fork, napkin, bottled water, business card, a small tray for your samples, a cake comment card for noting your flavor preferences, a pen, and a thank you card.
The bag is finished with August June Desserts branded tissue paper, and stamped with a signature logo sticker for a polished, cohesive presentation. This ensures your experience feels thoughtful from the moment you receive your box.
You can view the full assembly process on Instagram, where we share a behind-the-scenes look at how each tasting experience is prepared.
Preparing for the Consultation
Cake tastings and sampler boxes are offered every other month to allow time for thoughtful preparation, baking, and design—while also balancing the rhythm of business and everyday life. Each release is carefully curated so that every detail feels intentional and elevated.
While the cakes are being prepared, there is also intentional preparation happening for the consultation itself. This includes reviewing your event details, initial inspiration, and design direction ideas.

Why the Behind-the-Scenes Process Matters
A cake tasting is more than just sampling cake—it’s a reflection of the care, structure, and attention to detail that goes into every order. Industry-wide, consultations are meant to help couples explore ideas, flavors, and logistics in a guided, thoughtful way —but the experience begins long before that conversation ever happens.
At August June Desserts, the preparation behind the scenes is just as important as the consultation itself.

The Final Experience
By the time you arrive at your tasting, every detail—from flavors to packaging to preparation—has already been carefully considered.
The result is a relaxed, collaborative experience where you can focus on what matters most:
Enjoying the flavors
Sharing your vision
And beginning the design of your cake
